In honesty, noone really knows if we are or not. Scientists have begun to give up hope of finding out as we are so deep into the rabbit warren that is empty space.
Due to the sheer size of our galaxy - which we struggled to place ourselves in - getting beyond it is almost as near to impossible as we dare think, whilst we can map most of the million or so planetary systems. We can't begin to search beyond as our technology doesn't allow it.
The theories encased in gene roddenburry's star trek are simply enough Impossible. Hope and imagination are powerful, and the thought of alien warfare amongst entire galaxies and travelling at light speed just aren't real dreams. We can barely get particles to that sort of speed.
Anyway, in the grand scheme of so many light years where we are doesn't matter all too much because we parents staying still, and the parameters in which we locate are still changing, and not even at a defined rate... difficult one.
Because location is relative to other points, when the boundaries - the most distinctly defined points there are - are changing its difficult to pin point. We don't even know where the sides are, nor which are expanding fastest, this leaves us lost in a infinite location that we will never manage to explore enough to.make sense of.
So what does it matter where we are...
