Designer clothing

So, clothes, designers and such like.

So my oxford dictionary says that a designer can be any number of things depending on what they design. But for clothing design; A designer is 'A person who designs clothing' Pretty straight forward right?
That said, if you by your clothes from Asda, they aren't considered to be designer are they? But they have been designed. So, what is the difference?

Whilst in New York - the home of shopping - I observed the difference. Designer as a term only seems to be associated with clothes that are branded very clearly. I call this 'Splash Branding' because all the details of who and what you're wearing are all over you. Whereas wandering around Asda all the clothes are simple, plain and have very little information on them.

Now here is the real kick. The highest of high end, that which is usually either monumentally overpriced or ridiculously underpriced given the quality; often has very little branding on it. For a shirt or jumper, maybe just a simple logo - like the polo pony for Ralph Lauren to take a random example. But something like Hollister or Jack Wills have to have the entire brand written on it. Surely that means they want to be high end designer because they are trying to get noticed, but is it not derogatory to 'Splash' like that.

So really the most inexpensive clothes are the same as the most expensive clothes.

What tells them apart?
